Dr. Herman F. Nied is Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering and
Mechanics at Le-high University. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics
from Lehigh University in 1978. He returned to Lehigh University as a
Professor in 1995 after working in the industry for thirteen years. While
working for GE, he received thirteen patents and a number of awards, including
the Dushman Award in 1990. His research interests have focused on the
development of computational tools for the solution of complex manufacturing
problems, including welding simulation, semiconductor packaging, plastic
processing, interface fracture, and thermal shock behavior. He has developed
advanced computational methods for failure analysis, and the design of
semicon-ductor and optoelectronic packages. In 1997 he received an NSF
CAREER Award for research in designing with thermoplastics for structural
applications. He has published over 70 journal articles and is a Fellow
of American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
